Thoughts while shopping…
Bakery and bread…
Whole wheat bread,
Whole-grain flour tortillas…
As I shop,
I remember my friends from all over the world.
Meat and Seafood
Skinless chicken and turkey breasts
Ground turkey and chicken
I think of my father,
Who introduced me to the sea and its treasures,
And has an amazing talent for cooking meats.
Pasta and Rice….
Squash for making pasta…
I think of my mother,
And her inspirational way,
Of making even the simplest foods a success.
Oils, Sauces, Salad Dressings, and Condiments…
Extra virgin olive oil,
Jarred capers and olives,
Hot pepper sauce,
I think of my brother in law,
And how he includes sauces with all foods.
Cereals and Breakfast Foods
Whole-grain cereal bars,
I think of my sister and her love of breakfast.
Soups and Canned Goods…
Diced or whole peeled tomatoes,
Tuna and salmon packed in water
Low-sodium soups and broths,
Black, kidney, soy, and garbanzo beans;
Diced green chilies..
I remember my grandma,
And her amazing ability to can…
On Your List:
Frozen vegetables: broccoli, spinach, peas, and carrots (no sauce),
Frozen fruit: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries (without added sugar),
Low-fat ice cream,
Whole grain veggie pizza,
I think of my resourceful friends with young children.
Dairy and cheeses…
Skim or low-fat milk or soymilk,
Low-fat cottage cheese
Low-fat cheese or string cheese snacks
[Why can’t we get cheese here for a reasonable price?]
I think of my friends and family,
Who made me a natural food nerd.
Snacks and Crackers…
Dried fruit: apricots, figs, prunes, raisins, cranberries
Nuts: almonds, cashews, walnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachios (roasted and unsalted)
Seeds: sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, whole or ground flaxseeds
Peanut butter, almond, or soy butter
Dark chocolate pieces (containing more than 70% cocoa),
I remember long hikes in the woods,
With my closest companions.
Fruit: bananas, apples, oranges, mangoes, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries
Vegetables: sweet potatoes, baby spinach, broccoli, carrot sticks
I am reminded of my roots.
Unsweetened green and flavored teas
Calcium-fortified orange juice and other juices
I remember that life is a gift,
And to take it one step at a time.
